Church service in the bush

We drove 150 kilometers (90 miles) outside the city of Niamey, Niger to a village out in the bush. There we had a church service conducted in three languages. English, French, and the tribal language spoken by the people in the village. Below is Pastor David, who probably serves 3 or 4 of these small village churchs...like a circuit rider from America's history.

Below is their church building. The branch-and-reed structure in the foreground is the old building, and the cinderblock structure behind it is the new. When we arrived we heard their songs coming from the building. It was determined that there were too many of us to fit in the building, so we had our service in the shade of the tree.

After the service, we handed out candy. But they had never seen candy before...so they just held it in their hands until we showed them how to unwrap and eat it!


Dave L from our group is praying. His words are translated into French by the man on the left, and then into the tribal language by the man on the right.
